KU officially collects Border War trophy

? Kansas University associate athletic director Jim Marchiony officially accepted the Border War trophy Tuesday night at the Kansas City Sports Commission’s awards banquet.

Kansas defeated Missouri 21 1/2 points to 18 1/2 in the yearlong battle, which awards points for victories each time the rivals meet. For example, the Jayhawks earned three points for defeating the Tigers on Sept. 27 in football, and the men’s basketball team received 1 1/2 points for each of its victories against MU. Kansas clinched the border battle May 14-16 when it won two of three baseball games against Mizzou, claiming two of three possible points in the standings.

KU actually has had the trophy in its possession since the baseball victories last month.

“It’s great to win a competition like that,” KU senior associate AD Larry Keating said. “When you have such a competition, it brings more attention to sports other than football and basketball because all the sports become critical pieces in the whole thing. Obviously, men’s basketball and football delivered their wins, but it took everybody else to do their part, too.”
