Ottawa’s Blakesley becoming hot college football prospect

The letters and phone calls continue to pour in for Caleb Blakesley, one of the state’s most sought-after football recruits.

The Ottawa High senior-to-be has received two scholarship offers, the first from Mark Mangino and Kansas University and the second from Wyoming. Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State also assured Blakesley he’d be getting an offer soon after Blakesley stood out at their high school football camp earlier this summer.

In addition, Nebraska, Colorado State, Oklahoma and several other top programs have expressed interest in the lineman, an All-Huron League and Journal-World All-Area honoree.

It has made for a busy summer for both Blakesley and OHS football coach Pat Boeh, suddenly two of the most popular guys in Kansas high school football.

“But it’s all well worth it,” Boeh said. “He’s reaping the benefits of hard work. He put himself in a good position.”

Blakesley said he was not leaning toward any school at this point, but he hoped to make his decision before Sept. 3, when Ottawa opens its football season at Spring Hill.

The interest in Blakesley heightened during track and field season, where he was the Class 5A state champion in the shot put. At the Kansas Relays in April, he was the lone participant to top 60 feet in a loaded field representing five states.

These days, Blakesley is keeping in shape by lifting weights daily in preparation for football season. He now carries 280 pounds on his 6-foot-5 frame.

As a junior, Blakesley had his way with opponents in the trenches. Ottawa’s top two backs, Jason Houston and Dom Nation, combined for 2,024 rushing yards with Blakesley up front.
