Wet weather washes final round of city event

Mother Nature might have rained on Adam Stanley’s parade a little bit Sunday morning at the Lawrence Amateur Golf Assn.’s City Championship, but she could not keep him from walking away with a relatively easy victory.

Stanley, who shot a 66 in Saturday’s first round at Eagle Bend Golf Course, headed into Sunday’s action with a five-stroke lead over 2001 tournament winner Matt Bellemere and recent Lawrence High graduate Daniel Brumley, who both shot 71s Saturday.

However, showers and thunderstorms in the area forced the cancellation of Sunday’s final round at Alvamar Golf Club.

The threesome was scheduled to tee off as the final group at 11:30 a.m., but by that point, the course was too soggy.

The canceled round meant Stanley was crowned champion, and, even though it was done in an unconventional fashion, a win was still a win.

The cancellation of Sunday’s round was frustrating for Bellemere. Since winning the tournament in 2001, Bellemere has been runner-up once and has notched two third-place finishes at the City Championships.

“I hadn’t really played strong (Saturday),” Bellemere said. “Five strokes is a lot to come back against the kind of player (Stanley) is. But, yes, it is frustrating not to get a chance. Adam played really well yesterday, and that’s how it goes.”

Golf continues today in town, with qualifying for the 94th Kansas Golf Assn. Kansas Amateur taking place at Eagle Bend. Ninety-six players are competing for 27 openings.
