Outlaws reach title game

? Lawrence’s Outlaws lost their final pool-play game Sunday, but they still earned a berth in the championship game of the Pittsburg Wooden Bat Tournament.

Emporia used a five-run sixth inning to sink Lawrence, 10-5, in the pool-play finale. Regardless, the Outlaws (14-7 overall, 3-1 in the tournament) won their pool and advanced to the championship game against host Pittsburg.

That game, however, was postponed because of rain until July 6.

“We’re excited we’re in the championship game,” Outlaws coach Matt Schubert said. “We kind of backed into it, but Pittsburg’s a good team, good competition. We’re looking forward to it.”

The Outlaws and Emporia were tied, 5-all, heading into the bottom of the sixth, when Emporia took advantage of a bases-loaded error.

“It was a very good game,” Schubert said. “But we had that error and it opened the floodgates for ’em. We had the opportunity to get out of the inning without giving up any runs.”

Aaron Westerhouse, Cole Massey and Cory Cooper each had two hits for the Outlaws.

Lawrence will play host to a doubleheader with Paola on Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m. at Free State High.
