Future Jayhawk thrives

Colorado Springs, Colo. — Future Kansas University point guard Mario Chalmers finished as the third-leading scorer out of 48 players at last weekend’s Olympic Festival.

The 6-foot-2 native of Anchorage, Alaska, scored 111 points in five games for a 22.7 average. He hit 44.7 percent of his shots, including a festival-leading 16 three-pointers in 38 tries.

Chalmers also had 32 assists, the second-best mark in the tourney, against just 11 turnovers. He ranked first in steals with 17.

Louis Williams was leading scorer with 152 points. Future KU shooting guard Micah Downs averaged 6.8 points off 37.1 percent shooting.

Jayhawk wins in Missouri

Weldon Springs, Mo. — Kansas University senior-to-be Kevin Ward, of Leawood, won the 96th Missouri Amateur championship Sunday at the par-71 Persimmon Woods Golf Club. Ward won the 36-hole final match against Steve Groom, 6 and 5.
