Child agency seeks office help

Agency: Douglas County Child Development Assn.

Address: 2331 Ala., Suite 101

Contact: Anna Jenny, 842-9679

The Douglas County Child Development Assn. needs volunteers to assist in the office with clerical tasks such as assembling literature packets, making copies and organizing mailings. Volunteers are asked to commit at least two hours during business hours, though the organization is flexible and will schedule to fit volunteers’ needs. Retirees, people wishing to gain entry-level office experience and others interested in the field of early-childhood education may be especially interested in this opportunity. The association is a nonprofit organization that develops programs to support early-childhood care and education in Douglas County. For more information, call Jenny or visit www.dccda.org.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Bert Nash Mental Health Center’s Compeer Program matches community volunteers with people who need a concerned and caring friend. Compeer friends are people receiving help at Bert Nash who would benefit from a supportive friendship as they get involved in the community again. For more information, call the Compeer coordinator, Julie Trowbridge, at 830-1858.
  • Health Care Access is a medical clinic serving Douglas County residents who have limited financial means and are not covered by private or governmental insurance programs. The clinic needs green-thumb volunteers to help take care of its flower beds and plants with watering, weeding and other care. For more information, call Jessi at 841-5760.
  • The March of Dimes will have its “Jail and Bail” fund-raising event Aug. 19 at the Hereford House and needs volunteers to help run it. Volunteer “bailiffs” greet “prisoners” and take mug shots, escort them before the “judge,” seat prisoners in jail and provide instructions for their hourlong sentence. Volunteer “court clerks” review pledge forms and credit card slips and maintain running totals of pledges. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. For more information, call Cindy Gustafson at (785) 228-0084.
  • Interfaith Caring Neighbors will have two volunteer training sessions this week, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and at 10 a.m. Thursday. Attendance at only one session is required for new volunteers. The sessions last an hour to an hour and a half. ICaN volunteers are caring individuals who give one to two hours a week to assist an older person living independently by helping to shop for groceries or visiting once a week. To attend the training, call the ICaN office at 749-2005.
