County opens own budget process

Douglas County commissioners will start crunching numbers next week on a proposed $47.5 million spending plan for 2005.

The budget, as recommended by County Administrator Craig Weinaug, would hold the county’s property-tax rate steady while boosting employee wages by at least 2 percent, adding personnel at the county jail and holding the line on dozens of other services, from repaving county roads to managing the arena at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Commissioners open hearings on the proposed budget at 8:45 a.m. Monday at the County Courthouse, 1100 Mass. They received copies of the recommended budget this week.

Commissioners are scheduled to review budget details during hearings Monday and Tuesday. Commissioners’ recommendations would be incorporated into a draft budget scheduled for a final public hearing Aug. 11, after which commissioners would approve a final version to govern county spending for next year.
