Ludwig at nationals: Kansas University sophomore Adrian Ludwig will compete in the 800 meters in the USAT&F junior nationals Friday and Sunday at College Station, Texas. Ludwig is a 2003 Free State graduate and member of KU’s track and cross country teams.

  • Wranglers take first place: The U14 Kansas Wranglers took first place in last weekend’s USSSA AAA “Father’s Day Classic” in Ottawa. Team members include Michael Barnes, Randy Elliott, Adam Emerson, Josh Herschell, Tyler Hunt, Jordan Kircher, Cody Lown, Travis Sanders, Preston Scheibler, Mitchell Werts, Ryder Werts, Sean Wickliffe, John Wilson and Brad Witmer. The Wranglers are coached by Bob Emerson, Dave Witmer, Bob Werts and Bill Lown.
  • Soccer tryouts: Tryouts for the independent girls U-12 premier soccer team will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Free State soccer field. Bring ball, water, soccer shoes and shin guards. For more information, call Stan Rasmussen at 842-7790.
  • Tennis workshop: The Ottawa Recreation Commission is playing host to the USA Tennis developmental coach workshop June 26-27. The workshop will be located at Forest Park Tennis Center in Ottawa. For questions or to register, call the commission at (785) 242-1939.
  • Tournament on tap: The Ottawa Recreation Commission will also hold the Chautauqua Days softball tournament July 2-4 in Ottawa. Divisions offered are 18, 16, 14, 12 and 10. There is a three-game guarantee. To register or for more information, call the commission at (785) 242-1939.
  • Good as gold: Members of the Lawrence Track Club brought back five gold medals from the 2004 USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Missouri Valley Championships in Emporia on Saturday.

Winners were Alexa Harmon Thomas, Iris Cliffin, Jennifer Taylor, Kendall Francisco and Chris Johnson.
