Neal L. Slocum

? Graveside services for Neal L. Slocum, 87, De Soto, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Holton Cemetery.

Mr. Slocum died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Holton, the son of Fred and Lou Johnson Slocum.

Mr. Slocum attended school in Soldier.

He farmed and worked construction. He also worked for Cox Implement in Holton, Hercules Inc., in De Soto. In 1984, he retired from the city of De Soto after 15 years as a water plant operator.

Mr. Slocum served on both the De Soto city and Lexington Township fire departments.

He was a life member of the Holton Christian Church, the Kaw Valley Sportsman’s Club and the National Guard 137th Infantry.

He also was a former member of the Lawrence Rock and Gem Club.

Mr. Slocum married Juanita B. Miller on July 18, 1939, in Holton. She survives, of the home.

Twin sons, Arthur and Frederick Slocum, died in 1940. Another son, Lloyd Slocum, died in 1996.

Other survivors include two daughters, LaWanna Krestine, Otis, and Cheryl Zimmerman, Topeka; a brother, Cleo Slocum, Soldier; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., sent in care of the funeral home.
