Police pepper spray parolee after second vehicle chase

An alleged parole absconder from Paola had to be subdued with pepper spray after leading Lawrence Police on two vehicle pursuits in three days, police said.

Police first tried to stop the man about 7:45 p.m. Monday at Sixth and Kentucky streets on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident. An officer tried to stop the man’s Chevrolet Blazer but abandoned pursuit because the man was driving dangerously, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

A different officer spotted the vehicle about 10:40 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of West Ninth Street, Pattrick said. The man refused to stop and began speeding through intersections.

The officer backed off but continued to follow at a distance. He then saw the driver pull into a mobile home park in the 100 block of Perry Street, where the Blazer got stuck in mud.

The officer sprayed the man with pepper spray when he refused to get out of his vehicle, Pattrick said.

The man, identified as Chet W. Brown, 27, was charged Friday with offenses including fleeing to elude police and reckless driving. He was wanted by the Kansas Department of Corrections for a parole violation on a conviction for aggravated indecent liberties.
