Johnson County puts bistate tax on ballot

? The campaign for a sales tax to pay for sports and arts projects in the Kansas City area took a step forward Thursday.

Johnson County commissioners voted 5-2 to put the sales tax question on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Supporters of the tax said the decision would make it easier for similar voter referendums to be placed on the ballots in Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri, and in Wyandotte County in Kansas.

The proposal calls for collecting a quarter-cent sales tax over the next 12 to 15 years, collecting about $1.4 billion for renovations at the Chiefs and Royals stadiums as well as for regional arts projects. Both professional teams have said the renovations were key to their remaining in Kansas City through 2030.
