Voting program needs volunteers

Program: Kids Voting

Contact: Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030

The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is recruiting individuals and groups to volunteer with the Kids Voting program on Election Day, Nov. 2.

Kids Voting is sponsored by the Lawrence Journal-World in partnership with the volunteer center and Douglas County schools.

It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational program to enhance civics education and provide youths a voting experience at official polls on Election Day.

Volunteers are needed at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County to give students their ballots and tally up the votes at the end of each shift.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers and substitute drivers to keep the program running during the summer months when many regular volunteers travel on vacation. Volunteers deliver noon meals five days a week to elderly, disabled and homebound people. Each route of 8-10 homes takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and volunteers can serve one day per week or more if available. Call Kim Cullis at 979-1440 to sign up.
  • The Tisha L. Downing Memorial Golf Tourney will be Saturday at Alvamar Country Club, benefiting the Downing Scholarship Fund and Therapeutic Horse Riding Instruction of Lawrence. Volunteers can still help with the four-person scramble, fun hole contests, registration and other needs at the event. Call Kim Downing at (913) 369-3439 for more information or visit www.tishaldowningmemorialgolftournament.com
  • The Youth Volunteer Council is planning activities for the summer months, and local teens are encouraged to participate. Youth Volunteer Council activities allow area youths to make a difference in the community, gain service hours and meet other volunteering teens. Upcoming activities include the Chautauqua events, reading to children at community centers, gardening and yard work for senior citizens, and other projects benefiting local nonprofit agencies. For more information, call Mary Thompson at 865-5030.
