Lawrence in tornado watch

Get set for some heavy weather tonight.

The Lawrence area is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m., a flood watch until 6 a.m. Sunday and a severe thunderstorm watch that could bring hail and high winds through the evening, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

The tornado watch is for most of central and northeast Kansas and is in effect until 11 p.m. In the Lawrence area, counties in the watch are Douglas, Johnson, Shawnee, Osage and Franklin.

The evening forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with some storms being severe, bringing heavy rain. The flood watch area includes Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties.

Heavy rains, as much as 2 inches or more in a short period, could cause flooding conditions.

The strong storms are also capable of producing hail 1.5 inches or greater in diameter and damaging winds 70 mph or higher.

Overnight the low will drop to 69 by Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 50 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, with the possibility of heavy rain.

Skies are expected to be partly cloudy, with a high around 87.
