KU student-athletes set standard for GPA

Kansas University student-athletes recorded their best academic performance in department history during the spring 2004 semester, athletics director Lew Perkins announced Friday.

The athletes compiled a 2.98 grade-point average. A total of 226 Jayhawks were named to the athletic director’s Honor Roll (3.0 or better GPA), and 23 of the honorees recorded a perfect 4.0.

The KU swimming and diving team led the department with a team-record 3.39 GPA. KU rowing (3.39) and soccer (3.28) also achieved team-record GPAs. Men’s basketball achieved a 2.84 GPA, third best among KU’s male teams behind golf (3.12) and track and field (2.94).

The 226 Jayhawks who achieved a 3.0 or better in spring 2004 accounted for 55 percent of the total KU student-athlete population.

Here are the 2004 team GPAs: Swimming and diving 3.39 (team record), rowing 3.32 (team record), soccer 3.28 (team record), women’s track and field 3.24, women’s golf 3.20, volleyball 3.16, men’s golf 3.12, men’s track and field 2.94, men’s basketball 2.84, baseball 2.72, tennis 2.72, football 2.62, softball 2.62 and women’s basketball 2.60.
