Thome two homers shy of No. 400

? Jim Thome will have to wait at least another day before he gets a chance to hit his 400th career home run.

Philadelphia and the White Sox were postponed by rain Thursday night. No makeup date was announced.

While Thome needs only two more home runs to reach 400, he’s starting to think about 500.

“You approach them one at a time, I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but it’s nice to be closing in on that number,” Thome said. “That number is a special number, because there is a lot of great players that are around that number.”

Thome hit three home runs in the two games, which featured 48 combined runs. He homered twice Tuesday and hit his 398th home run in the fifth inning off White Sox starter Jon Garland on Wednesday.

It was his 40th career homer against the White Sox and he has homered in his last three games.

Thome, who has 17 homers this season, hasn’t set a goal for reaching 500.

“I don’t really think about that,” Thome said. “I think the main thing for me is to stay healthy. I have never set many goals, just the one goal I try to set every year is be in the lineup, be out there, be healthy and all that other stuff will take care of itself.”

Both teams get a chance to help their rotations and bullpens with the rainout.

Brett Myers (4-3) was the scheduled starter for Philadelphia, and Scott Schoeneweis (5-3) for Chicago. Myers will start today at Minnesota, and Schoeneweis will start tonight against Atlanta. Philadelphia’s Kevin Millwood and Chicago’s Esteban Loaiza each will be pushed back until Saturday.

Philadelphia has starters Vicente Padilla and Randy Wolf on the disabled list, and the White Sox still were looking for a fifth starter.

With the rainout, the White Sox do not need to find a starter for Saturday. The next time the fifth starter comes up in the rotation is June 19th in Montreal.

Chicago’s No. 5 starters have combined to go 0-7 with a 10.02 ERA in eight starts this season.
