Boyfriend charged with abandoning body in K.C.

? A Kansas City man was charged Thursday with abandoning the body of his girlfriend, who was found dead Sunday inside his sport utility vehicle in the city’s River Market Area.

Police believe Amber McGathey, 22, originally from Waterloo, Ill., was dead for four days before her nude body was found June 6 wrapped in a sheet and bound with tape and wire inside the vehicle owned by Matthew Davis, 38, said police Sgt. Doug Niemeier.

The two lived together in an apartment near where her body was found.

A witness has told police McGathey was seen dead inside the vehicle on Wednesday, June 2, but police are unsure what transpired between then and when her body was found early Sunday, Niemeier said.

The cause of death has not been determined, which is why Davis has been charged with abandoning her body, Niemeier said.

Davis was in jail on an unrelated offense when he was arrested. He is being held in the Jackson County jail on $50,000 bond.

Davis told a woman that his girlfriend overdosed in the vehicle, according to a statement of probable cause filed by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office.
