Doris Elaine Hicks

? Services for Doris Elaine Hicks, 83, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa, conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5901 Auxiliary. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

Mrs. Hicks died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Olathe Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Rantoul, the daughter of Marion and Blanche Alice Mills Vail. She completed eighth grade at West Valley School. She was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and moved to Ottawa in 1943.

Mrs. Hicks began working at Gibson’s Discount Center in Ottawa on April 24, 1965, as a sales clerk. The store changed names to Pamida and then Wal-Mart during her employment, which ended in retirement on Sept. 19, 1987. She returned to Wal-Mart on March 22, 1992, and worked as a door greeter and demonstration person. She worked in the grocery department at the time of her death. She was a life member of V.F.W. Memorial Post No. 5901 Auxiliary in Ottawa.

She married Earl R. Hicks on Sept. 24, 1945, in Lawrence. He died Sept. 15, 1989.

Survivors include two daughters, Earlene Rae Hicks, Ottawa, and Marcia Elaine Chapman, Wellsville; a sister, Emma Jayne Stottlemire, Ottawa; a goddaughter; a grandchild; two godgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today or from 8:30 a.m. until the service hour Thursday at the mortuary, where family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.
