City Commission supports increased library funding

The Lawrence City Commission today said it would support a major increase in funding for the Lawrence Public Library.

Commissioners said the library has been underfunded for years, and needs money to expand its collection and increase worker pay.

Commissioner David Dunfield noted that City Hall is already looking at an expansion of the library.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me for us to talk about a major expansion of the library if we’re not going to support the library we’ve got,” Dunfield said.

Under the proposal given tentative approval today, the library’s budget would increase by nearly a half-million dollars in 2005, from $2.07 million to $2.5 million.
