Rebels top Legends

“C’mon Dorn! Take one for the team,” Lawrence Rebels players heckled their teammate Craig Rosentengle as he dodged a pitch Sunday against the Topeka Legends.

The players were refering to Roger Dorn, the overly cautious character from the movie “Major League” who was notorious for dodging pitches.

Legends pitchers hit Hunter Scheib in three different at bats Sunday, and had trouble avoiding other Rebels, plunking three different batters in the fifth inning alone.

The Rebels (6-2) scored early and often in their 14-0 victory over the Legends in Shawnee County Amateur Baseball Assn. league play. Adam Davey and Jared Vinoverski had back-to-back doubles highlighting the Rebels’ nine-run first inning.

Rebels coach Shawn Lopez said that this game was not typical of all SCABA-league games. As a select team for 14-year-olds, the Rebels had the upper hand on the Legends, predominantly a team of 13-year-olds.

“One year makes a big difference, especially at this age,” Lopez said.

The Rebels anticipate more competition in its upcoming tournament this weekend in Shawnee.

Sunday’s game against the Legends, originally scheduled for this Saturday, was rescheduled because the Rebels will be playing in the Kansas City Classic at Fountain Bluffs Sports Complex in Liberty, Mo.
