Pet owners try everything from stinky sprays to aluminum foil to stop cats from scratching furniture.

Here’s a new defense: Fresh Kitty Furniture Protectors are strips of adhesive clear plastic for chair and sofa corners. They look like clear vinyl Band-Aids. “Only you and your pet know protection is in place,” says the company come-on.

Troy Petersen, president of Royal Pet Inc., says the strips are “claw friendly” because they are not sticky on the outside like some protectors and won’t collect fluff — from the cat or from your pashmina.

We are trying them on our velvet sofa and so far, so good. (Though they are noticeable when the sun shines on them.) The protectors are available at most Petco stores or at www.petco.com in two sizes, for $5 to $8 for a package of two.
