Club owner found guilty of murders

? Jurors found a nightclub owner guilty Friday of killing three men whose burned and dismembered bodies were found in a Cowley County field.

Arturo Garcia, 31, was charged in the deaths last summer of Oscar Ramirez, 27; his brother, Nicolas, 22; and Clint Jones, 30. Jurors found him guilty of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jones and Nicolas Ramirez, and returned a verdict of second-degree murder in Oscar Ramirez’s death.

Garcia had claimed he shot Oscar Ramirez after the brothers attacked him. Nicholas Ramirez was shot in the head after the initial shot.

Sedgwick County Dist. Atty. Nola Folston said the verdicts showed the jury considered every piece of evidence and was able to differentiate between the charges. She said she would seek the maximum prison term when Garcia is sentenced July 12.

“He will be spending a lot of time and a tremendous amount of years to think about what he has done and the lives he has taken by his violent activity,” Folston told KFDI radio.

Defense attorney Michael Waylan said his client got a fair trail, but he has not ruled out the possibility of an appeal.

Garcia showed no emotion as the verdict was read. The families of the victims cried and hugged each other afterward. They declined to talk to reporters.

Jones was slain July 26 in the basement of Garcia’s Club Mexico nightclub, and the Ramirez brothers died there five days later.

Witnesses called by the state testified that they saw the bodies in the nightclub basement and helped dispose of them.

Garcia, taking the stand in his own defense Wednesday, denied killing Jones and said he shot the Ramirez brothers in self-defense when they confronted him. Garcia said his 10-year-old son was with him in the building on July 31 and he began shooting when it appeared Oscar Ramirez was going for a gun.
