  • Jarrett Johnson, Baldwin, graduated summa cum laude in May from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. He received a Bachelor of Science in physics. His grade-point average was at least 3.9. Jessica Leonard, Overbrook, received a Bachelor of Science degree in justice systems.
  • Washburn University announces area students who made honors during the spring semester.

  • Katherine Rhodes, Lawrence; Linda Angle, McLouth; and Sara Harper, Perry, made the dean’s honor roll during the spring semester at Fort Hays State University by earning at least a 3.6 grade-point average.
  • Collin Schmidt, Lawrence, accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a ceremony this fall at Iowa State University.
  • Jeannie Jones, Lawrence, a transfer student from Ottawa University, is the recipient of a Transfer High Honors Scholarship at Barton College, Wilson, N.C. She is the daughter of John and Susan Jones, Lawrence. She will enter Barton College this fall and plans to study psychology.
  • Dhwani Shah, daughter of Naina Shah and Kiran Shah, Lawrence has been named the outstanding student of the year in calculus at Saint Mary’s School, Raleigh, N.C. The award was presented during an academic honor convocation May 20 at the school. Shah is a senior.
  • Cuyler Halpin made the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Halpin, Lawrence.
  • Jessica Foulke, Lawrence, received a Presidential Scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year at McPherson College. The scholarship is primarily based on academic achievement.
  • Katrina Wesbecker, Lawrence, was one of 14 students selected as a member of the Washburn University Cheer Squad for the 2004-2005 school year. Wesbecker will be a freshman at Washburn. Each member of the squad must be enrolled as a full-time student and must maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Members receive athletic scholarships.

The squad represents the university by performing at home football and basketball games, in addition to alumni association events and campus activities.

  • Ryan Rowland, Lawrence, received a $1,000 Presidential Scholarship from Garden City Community College for the 2004-2005 academic year. Rowland, a 2003 Lawrence High School graduate, is the son of Ron and Debbie Rowland.
  • Family and friends are having a card shower for Toots Tryon who will celebrate her 87th birthday on Thursday. Cards may be sent to her at the Eudora Nursing Center, 1415 Maple St., Eudora 66025.
  • Danielle Pool, Lawrence, graduated May 20 from Kaw Area Technical School in Topeka. Danielle received 14 credit hours in early childhood education while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average. Danielle is a 2002 graduate of Free State High School. She is the daughter of Jan Pool, Lawrence, and Paul and Terri Pool, Blue Springs.

  • Washburn University announces area students who received scholarships from the department of education. They are Jennifer Perez, Laura Siegfreid and Kimberly White, Lawrence; Sherrie Wright and Heather Trinkle, McLouth; Kimberly George, Oskaloosa; and Rachel Strohm, Overbrook.

Sean Gallagher, a 2000 graduate of Free State High School, graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in journalism this fall at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communications. He is the son of Pat Gallagher, professor at California State University, and Karen Symms Gallagher, dean and professor of the USC Rossier School of Education. Karen Gallagher is the former dean of education at KU.

  • Melissa Moreno, Eudora, and Maria Gunselman, Lawrence, were recognized for receiving at least a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average at Emporia State University.
  • Clinton Goos, Tonganoxie, received a juris doctorate from Washburn University School of Law during a commencement ceremony on May 15. He also received a certificate in natural resources law.
  • Ann Leiker, a junior at Kansas University, was selected as the 2004-2005 recipient of the Donna Evans Kingsbury scholarship award. Leiker, a 2001 graduate of Free State High School, received her award during a recognition ceremony on May 10. She is the daughter of Leo and Elaine Leiker, Lawrence.
  • Brad Reed, Oskaloosa High School principal, announced the Students of the Month for May. They were Erica Subelka, junior; Erika Engelken, sophomore; Rachel Cunningham, sophomore; and Jason Rodriguez, freshman. They were recognized for promoting positive actions and behavior in their school and community.
  • Several area students were recognized during Emporia State University’s School of Business annual honors banquet.

Seniors who earned at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average were Natalie Moreau, Baldwin; Sundee Sipe, Linwood; Stephanie Norris, Ottawa; Jodi Bachelor, Overbrook; Diane Vogel, Tecumseh; and Sarah Eatinger, Wellsville.

The 2003-2005 Capitol Federal Scholars were Moreau; Sherry Moffitt, De Soto; and Marc Connelly, Lawrence.

Moreau also was recognized for receiving a Wall Street Journal scholarship.

  • Roxanna Vangemeren, a Free State High School graduate, graduated from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Wash. She majored in studio art. She is the daughter of Jane and Casey Vangemeren, Lawrence.
  • Lawrence residents Jamie Brummell, Jessica Blaire Cooper and Anna Huston Marshall were among the 44 baccalaureate nurse graduates of the Washburn University School of Nursing who were recently honored.

Brummell was named to the dean’s council and is a member of Student Nurses of Washburn. He is the son of Alan and Jan Brummell, Lawrence.

Cooper was named to the dean’s honor roll and was inducted into the Eta Kappa Chapter-at-Large of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. She is the daughter of Bob and Lea Ann Cooper, Lawrence.

Marshall was named to the dean’s honor roll. She is the daughter of John and Melinda Huston, Lawrence.

  • The U.S. Achievement Academy has announced that Tony Zuzzio, Baldwin, has been named an All-American Collegiate Scholar. Zuzzio, a Baker University student, was nominated for the award by Lisa Johnston, assistant dean for student academic services at Baker University. Zuzzio is the son of Ted and Karen Zuzzio, Baldwin.
  • Kelcie Fincham, daughter of Jack and Melinda Fincham, and a 2000 graduate of Free State High School, has received a Fulbright Scholarship. She will be teaching English to French students in Rennes, France, beginning Oct. 1, for seven months. She will graduate June 13 from Dartmouth College with a major in chemistry with an environmental studies emphasis, and a minor in French.
  • Area students in the College of Arts and Science at Baker University, Baldwin, were recognized for their significant achievement at the university’s Academic and Leadership Honors Banquet.
