Christopher and Manda Smith, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Jamari Jesse Smith, born May 25, 2004, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Maternal grandparents are Nina Blindt and Gary Blake.   • Dennis Miller and Angie Woydziak Miller, Eudora, announce the birth of a daughter, Haley Danielle, born May 4, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Connie and Larry Woydziak, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Kelly and Mike Chase, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Pat Murrow, Rose Hill; Betty Woydziak, Rose Hill; Marilyn and Larry Sage, Baltimore; and Eileen and Ray Miller, Mayview, Mo. Great-great-grandmother is Laverne Sage, Chillicothe, Mo.
  • The Lawrence High School Class of 1969 is planning its 35th reunion. The event will be Sept. 3-5 and includes a buffet dinner, dance and golfing. The reunion committee is searching for classmates.   • Kristen Van Saun and Andrea Walker, both of Lawrence, have been named two of five inaugural recipients of the J.L. Weigand Jr. Notre Dame Legal Education Scholarship. The scholarships were established to offer assistance to law students from Kansas.

Van Saun, a 1997 Lawrence High School graduate, is a 2006 juris doctorate candidate at Kansas University. She received a bachelor’s degrees in finance and computer applications in 2001 at Notre Dame. She ranks in the top 5 percent of her class and was selected to be a KU Law Student Ambassador. While attending law school, she is employed as a law clerk at Lathrop & Gage in Kansas City, Mo.

Walker, a 1995 Osawatomie High School graduate, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with distinction and honors from KU in 1999. She ranks in the top 2 percent of her class and is comments editor for the Washburn Law Journal. She is employed as a law clerk at Goodell, Stratton, Edmonds & Palmer of Topeka.

  • Melissa Swenson, Lawrence, received an associate’s degree May 15 from Colby Community College.
  • James Ashcraft, Lawrence, and Ivy Lau, a Kansas University student from Wichita, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from Hy-Vee Inc. for their academic achievements and community involvement.

Ashcraft, who works at the Hy-Vee store on Clinton Parkway, plans to attend Kansas State University this fall. Lau is pursuing a degree in pharmacy.

  • Lawrence resident Laura Beth Domke received a Master of Divinity degree May 15 from the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University in Atlanta.
  • Nicole Berry, a 2003 Free State High School graduate, made the dean’s honor roll during the spring semester at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Rachel Severance, daughter of Vashti Winterburg and David Severance, Lawrence, graduated May 16 with an associate’s degree from Cottey College, Nevada, Mo.
