Kansas City region’s activity flat

The Kansas City region of the Federal Reserve reported economic activity that generally was flat or weaker than previous surveys, Fed officials said Wednesday.

Fed officials said retail sales and automotive sales were generally flat from the last survey in the late spring. Travel and tourism businesses, however, reported strong increases. Manufacturers said they were running at near capacity and expected growth to remain very strong into the fall.

Residential real estate sales increased, according to the survey, but commercial real estate sales were generally weak. The survey also found hiring announcements exceeded layoff announcements in the region by a wide margin.
