Welcome event

Hopefully some of the thousands of girls playing in the national softball tournament this week will find reasons to return to Lawrence.

The American Fastpitch Assn. “B” Girls National Tournament is a wonderful event for Lawrence.

The tournament this week has brought 126 teams and about 1,800 players from 10 states to Lawrence. The games are being played at the Clinton Lake Softball Complex southwest of Lawrence, and the weeklong event has had a significant economic impact on the city.

Not only are teams staying in local motels and eating in local restaurants, it’s hard to imagine thousands of teenage girls going anyplace without doing a little shopping. Business downtown reportedly has been brisk this week thanks to the tournament.

Beyond that, however, Lawrence has had an opportunity to leave a positive impression with many young women who, within a few years, will be considering where they might attend college.

Lawrence is negotiating to bring the tournament back for the next two years. Whether it’s to visit, play softball, attend college or seek a job, Lawrence should let the players know they’re welcome any time.
