At least two Lawrence bookstores haven’t noticed a surge of customers diving for the Sept. 11 commission’s report, released in paperback and distributed locally Thursday morning.

Associates at Borders, 700 N.H., said they would have tallies of the number of books sold Thursday by today.

“People are asking for it,” said Julie Haupt, the store’s inventory manager.

At 6 p.m., more than 25 of the 516-page books were still stacked on a front table next to a mass of Bill Clinton’s autobiography. An occasional shopper stopped to peruse the commission’s report.

“I’d probably go for a summary rather than the full book,” said Ariel Tribble, a Freemont, Calif., resident who stood reading excerpts for about 10 minutes.

Hastings, 1900 W. 23rd St., saw a similar response. The store had 40 copies of the book Thursday morning but sold only one before a computer error denied that the book was in stock.

Several people inquired about it earlier in the week, said Veronica Wilson, a Hastings book associate.

“But we actually haven’t had anyone coming in begging for it,” she said.

Wilson said the store sold one copy Thursday morning before the glitch prevented further sales.
