Escaped prisoner benefited from error

? An inmate who escaped from a work crew was facing charges of attempted murder and rape, which should have prevented him from being classified as minimum security, authorities said Monday.

The problem: the Kansas Department of Corrections was unaware of the pending charges.

Anthony Jefferson, 38, was serving a three-year, four-month sentence out of Lansing Correctional Facility for drug-related convictions when he escaped Friday from a minimum-security work crew in Kansas City, Kan.

He was arrested Sunday in Tulsa, Okla., where he is awaiting extradition.

“If we would have known he had serious pending felony charges, there is no way he would have been placed on community work detail,” said Chuck Simmons, deputy secretary for facilities management.

Last month, Jefferson was bound over for trial in the shooting of a Hutchinson man during a robbery on Feb. 1. Jefferson also was recently charged with rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated criminal sodomy involving a Hutchinson woman in February.

Agencies where the charges are pending are responsible for notifying the state prison system, Simmons said, adding that was not done in Jefferson’s case.

Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson agreed that his office should have notified state corrections officials.
