Temperatures push toward 100 today

Lawrence might hit the 100-degree mark today for the first time this summer — which could create dangerous conditions for the elderly, children and pets kept outdoors, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“It’s going to be very hot and humid, with heat indices in the range of 102 to 106,” Schack said. “If you have to be outside today, make sure you take some precautions.”

She encouraged wearing light-colored clothing and drinking plenty of fluids. She also encouraged checking on the elderly and children, and making sure outdoor pets have shade and water.

This morning’s temperatures were relatively cool, with thermometer readings in the low 70s at 8:30 a.m. and calm winds. Winds were expected to pick up today to 5 to 15 mph from the southwest, under mostly sunny skies, Schack said. Temperatures were expected to reach 89 by noon and 98 by 4 p.m., she said.

“That’s going to bring our temperature up to near the 100-degree mark today,” she said. The last time Lawrence had a 100-degree day was 327 days ago — on Aug. 27, 2003, she said. The average high for today is 91. The record high for today is 108, set in 1934.

More hot weather is in store for Wednesday. The morning low will be 74, with the high reaching 97 by Wednesday afternoon, with 10-15 mph southwest winds.

But some relief from the heat is in store for the rest of the week. A trough from the west begins to move in Wednesday afternoon, with a cold front right behind it, Schack said. That will bring a chance for some scattered thundershowers Wednesday night into Thursday morning, she said.

Temperatures will fall to 72 by Thursday morning. And temperatures Thursday will be about 10 degrees cooler, with the high reaching only 88. There are also chances for thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening.

Schack said July has been an unusually wet month, with 6.85 inches of rain officially recorded already for the month at Lawrence Municipal Airport. That’s more than 4 inches above the average July rainfall as of this date for Lawrence, which is 2.5 inches, she said.
