Galindo cleared to play

Incoming freshman Alex Galindo is eligible to play basketball at Kansas University this season.

Galindo, a 6-foot-7 forward from St. Benedict’s High in Newark, N.J., has been granted a complete release from his national letter of intent (with Texas El-Paso) by the Collegiate Commissioners Assn.

Galindo, who received a release from UTEP’s athletic director last spring after coach Billy Gillispie resigned, would have had to sit out a season and lose a year of eligibility had the CCA not ruled in his favor.

Galindo, who had surgery earlier this summer to repair a broken left wrist, recently had his cast removed and has been cleared to shoot. It’s expected he will be cleared for full-contact pickup games this week.

Incoming freshman C.J. Giles received his release from the University of Miami and the CCA earlier this summer. He also is eligible to play immediately for the Jayhawks.
