Great addition
Lawrence has added a dramatic new piece to its public art collection.
“From the Ashes,” dedicated at the Lawrence Visitor Center on July 4, is a wonderful addition to the Lawrence landscape.
The towering bronze sculpture, by Jim Brothers, depicts a half-man, half-phoenix rising from flames. The dramatic figure is well-located in the center of the circle drive that serves the visitor center, the former Union Pacific depot in North Lawrence. Concrete benches and an American flag complete the attractive installation.
This sculpture, which is dedicated to local residents who served as soldiers, sailors, police and firefighters, was a true community effort. More than 250 local residents donated toward the $200,000 cost of the memorial.
Lawrence is so fortunate to be home to many wonderful artists including the nationally known Brothers. What a special honor to be able to enjoy local sculpture by the same artist who created the pieces for the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., and other national venues.
You can tell a lot about a community by observing its public spaces. Lawrence’s well-maintained parks and public areas, many of which are defined by wonderful pieces of local artwork, are a great reflection of our community pride.
