KU’s Green sporting new look

Kansas University football fans might not recognize Clark Green — at least not out of uniform — this fall.

Green, KU’s leading rusher each of the past two seasons, had sported cornrows in each of his first three seasons in Lawrence, but no more.

“It was time for a new look and a change,” he said Saturday, a day after having his trademark locks buzzed. “The heat was killing me sometimes. It gets pretty hot under the helmet. I hope it helps me some during two-a-days.

“I wanted to see how it feels. I hadn’t had a haircut in a long time.”

Green, a fourth-year junior, was one of 11 Jayhawks working on a house for Habitat for Humanity on Saturday at 1816 Atherton Court. He said he would let his hair grow back during the offseason.

The Tampa, Fla., product won’t be the only Green in KU’s backfield when players report to preseason camp Aug. 6. He and sophomore John Randle could be challenged for playing time by San Antonio freshman Gary Green II, who also was volunteering Saturday.

“He’s a good kid,” Clark Green said. “I haven’t seen him on the field yet, but he’s participating in seven-on-seven, and he’s doing well.”
