KU’s Bookman fails to reach 200 finals

? Kansas University sprinter Leo Bookman’s 2004 Olympic dreams ended in the semifinals of the 200-meter run at the United States track and field trials Saturday.

Bookman placed 11th in the 200 semifinals in 20.66 seconds. Only the top eight runners advanced to the finals.

Shawn Crawford of Nike was the top qualifier at 20.00 seconds; Nike’s Justin Gatlin was the final qualifier at 20.50 seconds.

In the quarterfinals, Bookman advanced with a time of 20.54 seconds. He was third in his heat and 10th overall.

Two other athletes with KU ties will compete in finals today.

KU throws coach Doug Reynolds will compete in the discus finals at 5:05 p.m., and ex-Jayhawk Charlie Gruber will run in the 1,500 finals at 6:30 p.m.
