American Cancer Society accepting car donations

The American Cancer Society Heartland Division is offering Auto Auctions in Topeka and Lawrence. By taking donated vehicles and auctioning them off, Auto Auction raises money to help fund cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Donated vehicles will be picked up and sent to auction by the American Cancer Society at no cost to the donor.

To donate a vehicle, the following requirements must be met:

  • Current title must be in donor’s name;
  • All liens, storage and service fees must be cleared;
  • All tires must be inflated; an engine must be present, although car doesn’t have to run.

Boats and recreational vehicles will be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Donated vehicles may be tax deductible. For more information, call (877) 999-2277 or Jared Buchbaum at (816) 842-7111.

John Deere video game offers lesson on farm life

Video games usually play out in spaceships, dungeons, battlefields or athletic fields. But farm fields?

“John Deere American Farmer” is a new computer game that lets players sow digital crops, milk computerized livestock and raise virtual barns.

It’s the first game licensed by Moline, Ill.-based Deere & Co., makers of the green and yellow tractors and farm equipment.

The $20 title simulates market prices, weather, farm hands — and the occasional plague.

“It’s the most authentic farming experience available besides working the fields yourself,” said Paul Rinde, chief executive of Destineer, the game’s publisher.

Based in North Carolina since 1875, I’m the second-largest U.S. cigarette manufacturer, with nearly a quarter of the U.S. cigarette market. I make four of the nation’s 10 best-selling cigarette brands: Camel, Winston, Salem and Doral. Introduced in 1913, Camels were the first nationally marketed cigarettes. Wary of Wall Street, my founder launched an employee stock program back in 1912, to keep much of me in workers’ hands. I introduced the 20-cigarette pack in 1913 and the one-piece, 10-pack carton in 1915. I bought Nabisco Brands in 1985, but we’ve since been separated. Who am I?
