Love admitted to institution

Los Angeles — Embattled singer Courtney Love is a “troubled rock star” who now has a legal guardian and has been admitted to an “institution” in the eastern United States, her civil lawyer has said.

The revelations came Tuesday during a civil court case in Los Angeles, held four days after the widow of grunge rocker Kurt Cobain was rushed to a New York hospital just hours after a warrant was issued for her arrest because she failed to turn up in court to face unrelated criminal charges, the Associated Foreign Press reported.

Civil attorney Robert Ring made the comments as he represented the 40-year-old singer and actress in a lawsuit in Los Angeles in which she is accused of failing to settle her legal bills.

Coppola, Tarantino dating

New York — At the Cannes Film Festival in May, director Quentin Tarantino announced, “Cinema, mon amour!” It appears he may have another love in his life.

Tarantino and filmmaker Sofia Coppola are “seeing each other,” Bumble Ward, publicist for both, confirmed Tuesday.

They “enjoy each other’s company,” Ward told The Associated Press.

Earlier this year, Coppola, 33, won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Lost in Translation.” Tarantino won the screenplay Oscar in 1995 for “Pulp Fiction.”

Coppola was married to director Spike Jonze (“Adaptation”) for four years. The couple separated a year ago, and Coppola filed for divorce last December.

Bergman retiring from stage

Stockholm, Sweden — Ingmar Bergman, one of the great masters of modern film, celebrated his 86th birthday Wednesday with a sour gift for fans: an announcement that he’s retiring from the stage.

Bergman said his 2002 production of Henrik Ibsen’s “Ghost” at Sweden’s Royal Dramatic Theatre would be his last.

“After ‘Ghost,’ I decided that this must be it. I do not want them to carry me out of the theater. I’m leaving by myself,” he said in an interview with the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

Bergman has won three Oscars in the best foreign film category, the last in 1984 for “Fanny and Alexander.”

Lisa Marie, Elvis’ daughter turned pop star, expressed relief that her teenage daughter, who uses her middle name, Riley, hadn’t turned out like Paris Hilton.

In April 2003, Lisa Marie said similar things about Paris and her sister, Nicky, to the Los Angeles Times: “Those two are the epitome of what my mother raised me not to be. … Maybe it’s the bleach that fascinates people.”
