‘Kingdom,’ ‘Pepsi Smash’ fizzle out

Two series wrap up their summer seasons without having made much of a ripple in the ratings pool.

A seance provides some answers to the long-simmering shenanigans on “Kingdom Hospital” (7 p.m., ABC). This series, starring Andrew McCarthy and Diane Ladd, represents a commercial and creative nadir for ABC’s relationship with Stephen King, the prolific spook-meister from Maine.

It’s interesting to note that while this show sank, TNT had great success with its remake of King’s “Salem’s Lot.” With its campy references to King’s canon, “Kingdom” was over-the-top from the get-go. Thriller fans did not warm to the show’s in-jokes, slow pace and bizarre elements. Viewers in search of superior chills should not miss the five-part series “The 4400” airing Sunday nights on USA. The two-hour pilot (7 p.m.) repeats today.

  • “Pepsi Smash” (7 p.m., WB) fizzles out with appearances by reality TV star Jessica Simpson; Avril Lavigne; 213 featuring Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Nate Dogg; and Seether featuring Amy Lee. Singer-songwriter John Mayer performs in a concert from the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colo.

Jessica Simpson’s other half has not been entirely idle: Nick Lachey has joined the cast of “Charmed.” Is it just me, or is there something odd in the fact that Simpson, who came to fame on the Christian pop circuit, is now married to a star of a show that peddles occult themes to young WB viewers? Just wondering.

Tonight’s other highlights

  • An Arizona sheriff (Clint Eastwood) travels to Manhattan in search of a murder suspect in the 1968 drama “Coogan’s Bluff” (7 p.m., AMC), directed by Don Siegel.
  • Scheduled on “Primetime” (9 p.m., ABC): Halle Berry’s estranged husband, Eric Benet, discusses rumors and Berry’s comments about him on “Oprah”; director M. Night Shyamalan discusses techniques he and others use to scare movie audiences out of their wits.
