I was founded at Stanford 10 years ago, by two electrical engineering Ph.D. candidates who devised a way to organize Web sites of interest to them. Soon they had a big directory with many categories and I was born — first as “Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web” and later as an acronym for “yet another hierarchical officious oracle.” I went public in 1996 with 49 employees, and my stock has advanced some 2,500 percent since then. Today I’m the No. 1 Internet brand globally, serving more than 230 million people monthly. Who am I? (Answer: Yahoo!)
