SACRAMENTO, CALIF. ? Abby Emsick, a Kansas University junior-to-be from Council Bluffs, Iowa, didn’t advance to the finals in the women’s discus throw after finishing 22nd during qualifying Saturday at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Emsick’s best throw was 168 feet, 2 inches, well short of the lowest qualifying distance (180-10). Emsick, who took a red-shirt year in the spring, had a best throw of 180-8 going into the U.S. team trials. The top 12 distances after tiebreakers advanced to Monday night’s finals.

Leo Bookman, who won three NCAA championships in the 200-meter dash with the Jayhawks, will compete in the men’s 200 qualifying at 6 p.m. Friday. He already is a provisional qualifier.

Former Jayhawk javelin thrower Scott Russell, of Windsor, Ontario, will be in Victoria, British Columbia, today for the Canadian Trials. He owns the best javelin throw among his countrymen, but it only is 255-2. He would need to throw at least 268-4 to be eligible to go to Athens.

Andrea Bulat, also of Windsor, finished third in the women’s javelin finals Saturday with a toss of 139 feet.
