Hospice patient dies

A terminally-ill patient whose sister was quoted throughout a story in Friday’s Journal-World about hospice care has died.

Geoffrey Guzicki, 42, Lawrence, died Thursday at his home.

His sister, Linda Sosa, had traveled on Easter to Lawrence from her home in Japan to be his primary caregiver with the assistance of Hospice Care.

The story told of plans by Hospice Care in Douglas County to begin a fund drive with the goal of building a hospice house in Lawrence.

Science fiction authors to appear at Oread Books

More than a dozen award-winning science fiction and fantasy authors will talk and sign books from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. today at Oread Books in the Kansas Union.

The event is free and open to the public.

Authors scheduled to attend the book signing are: Brian Aldiss, Robin Wayne Bailey, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, KU emeritus professor James Gunn, Harry Harrison, Kij Johnson, Jack McDevitt, Frederik Pohl, Pamela Sargent, Donna Shirley, Joan Slonczewski and George Zebrowski.

The book signing is in conjunction with the annual Campbell Conference, the John W. Campbell and Theodore Sturgeon Awards and this year’s inductions into the Science Fiction & Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Aldiss and Harrison will be honored as 2004 inductees. Posthumous inductees are Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and E. E. “Doc” Smith.

‘Will Rogers’ bringing wit, wisdom to Watkins

The wit and wisdom of cowboy humorist Will Rogers will be reprised Sunday at the Watkins Community Museum of History.

Doug Watson, a professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University, will assume the role of Rogers for the final presentation of the museum’s Sesquicentennial Lecture Series.

Watson’s presentation begins at 3 p.m. at the museum, 1047 Mass., and is free and open to the public.

Rogers, born in Oklahoma, gained fame as a cattle roper but soon lassoed the nation’s attention through his coast-to-coast radio program, roles in Broadway shows and in 71 movies during the 1920s and ’30s. He also was a prolific author, writing six books and more than 4,000 newspaper columns while befriending presidents and other leaders around the world.
