Lawrence was getting some scattered light showers and rumbles of thunder this morning. But the rain is expected to end by noon, leaving behind hot and windy conditions for the afternoon and more July-like weather for the weekend, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

At 7:30 a.m., light rain was falling throughout Lawrence, including light sprinkles in southern Lawrence and in the downtown area.

Most of the heavy thunderstorm activity moved to the south of Lawrence, Schack said. The western part of Douglas County saw some heavier showers early this morning, but only light sprinkles made it to Lawrence. The rains were moving east and south about 3 mph, she said.

“It’s going to end by the noon hour, with some sunshine this afternoon,” Schack said.

This afternoon, temperatures will rise, with winds 10 to 20 mph and the high reaching 88 by 4 p.m., she said.

“There’s plenty of July-like temperatures in store for your weekend,” she said.

Saturday’s morning temperature will start out at 70, climbing to a high of 92, under mostly clear skies, she said. Sunday’s morning low will be 71, with the high climbing to 93, with partly cloudy skies.

“We’ll be feeling the heat, starting next week,” Schack said.

Monday through Wednesday, temperatures will range from the low 70s in the morning to the low 90s in the afternoon, Schack said. The next chance for rain won’t be until Wednesday afternoon, she said.
