The Yankees faced the Astros in a close game June 30 at Holcom Sports Complex.

In a result befitting the back-and-forth Parks and Recreation Department Jhawk Baseball League game, neither team went down in defeat, as the Yankees came back in the bottom of the fourth and final inning to tie the game at 4-all on Mike Lyons’ RBI double that scored Kirby Evers.

“It’s kind of like kissing your sister,” Yankees coach Craig Chamberlain said. “It’s our second tie of the year, but it’s better than losing.”

After giving up two runs in the first inning, the Yankees battled back in the bottom half of the frame. Alex Cham-berlain got things started with a double, then stole third base. Nick Pryor brought Cham-berlain home for the Yankees first run.

Astros pitcher Derek Hout struggled with his control at times in the inning, giving up a bases-loaded walk to Sam Dellon that tied the game at 2-all.

With the bases still loaded, and the game in danger of getting away from him, Hout struck out Robert Flaig to end the inning.

Lyons pitched a scoreless second inning for the Yankees, capping it off by striking out Augustus Rials.

The Yankees threatened again in the bottom of the second when Chamberlain beat out a ground ball for a single, and Ethan Vogelsang followed with a single, putting runners at first and third with one out.

After a walk to Pryor, the Yankees again loaded the bases. And again it was Hout who came up big, fielding a ground ball off the bat of Lyons and throwing to catcher Dylan Ediger to force out Chamberlain at the plate.

Vogelsang scored the Yankees’ only run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk as the team took a 3-2 lead.

Hout ripped an RBI double to centerfield in the top of the third inning, tying the game at 3-all.

Then it was Yankees pitcher Sam Dellon’s turn to get out of a tight spot as Astros loaded the bases. Dellon was up for the challenge, though, striking out the last two batters of the inning and keeping the score tied.

After the Astros held the Yankees scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, Hout hit an RBI triple in the top of the fourth to put the Astros up 4-3. It could have been worse for the Yankees, but Lyons, playing centerfield, caught a drive off the bat of Gabe Ballard-Hanson.

Then, with the game on the line in the bottom of the fourth inning, Lyons stepped to the plate and delivered a game-tying double.

Knowing the fourth inning was the final one because of the length of the game, Ballard-Hanson, then pitching for the Astros, made sure his team escaped with a tie by striking out the final batter of the game.

“They were warriors, both teams,” Astros coach Shawn Hout said.
