‘Spider-Man 2’ poised to smash box-office record

Los Angeles — It looks as though Spider-Man has caught another box-office record in his web.

Unofficial estimates Sunday put the gross for “Spider-Man 2” in the $150 million to $155 million range since the film opened Wednesday, which would shatter the record for best Wednesday-Sunday opening set in May by “Shrek 2” with $129 million.

“Spider-Man 2” distributor Sony declined to provide weekend estimates Sunday, saying it would wait to report numbers today. But other studios generally were tracking “Spider-Man 2” at about $90 million for the three-day weekend, which followed an estimated $64 million take Wednesday and Thursday.

Actor charged for failing to register as sex offender

Sarasota, Fla.– Actor Jeffrey Jones, best known for playing the high school principal in the 1980s comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” is accused of failing to register as a sex offender.

Jones, 57, pleaded no contest last July to a felony charge of employing a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photos. The actor was sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to register as a sex offender and undergo counseling.

Officials said Jones registered the address he was at last year, but moved in March without registering again.

On Thursday, authorities arrested Jones and charged him with failing to register as a sex offender.

Jones also has appeared in the new HBO series “Deadwood.”

No more waddling

Little Rock, Ark.– Gov. Mike Huckabee sprinted across a finish line that a year earlier, he probably would have waddled over.

Huckabee completed the Firecracker 5K on Saturday, just over a year after starting a diet that has pared 105 pounds from his frame.

“I still had some juice left,” Huckabee, 48, said at the finish line, wiping sweat from his head. “The first quarter-mile is really hard, but I hit the halfway point and I knew then it was OK.”

When he was asked his time, he joked, “Forty-eight years, 10 months and nine days. I really was running from 48 years of bad habits.”

Huckabee started a medically supervised diet and regular exercise routine on June 10 of last year.
