Rosales extends U.S. Open lead

Philippines native ahead of trio by three strokes

? Officials in her native Philippines offered to throw Jennifer Rosales a parade when she notched her first LPGA victory 10 weeks ago.

Imagine the possibilities if she triumphs at the biggest event in women’s golf.

“I can run for president if that happens,” cracked the free-spirited Rosales, who turned down the initial offer. “Honestly, I don’t know what they’re going to do.”

Having balloons and confetti on standby might be wise after Rosales stretched her U.S. Women’s Open lead to three shots Saturday with a 2-under-par 69 at Orchards Golf Club.

Now all the 25-year-old pro has left to seal the deal is stave off the game’s No. 1 player, a three-time major champion and a couple of seasoned veterans.

“I can’t let myself think too far ahead,” Rosales said. “I can’t put too much pressure on myself before I tee it up. I’m just going to try to relax … and see what happens.”

Rosales pulled away with two birdies in her final eight holes to stand at 7-under 206, taking a lead into the final round for just the second time in her five-year career.

Three strokes back are Annika Sorenstam (70), Meg Mallon (67) and Kelly Robbins (68).

Mallon, who claims the 1991 Open among her three major crowns, turned in the day’s best round with a 67. Robbins, last year’s co-runner-up, carded a 68.

“It’s a great mix,” Mallon said. “You have the veterans, you have the No. 1 player in the world and you have the players that want to come out and be a professional golfer someday.”

Michelle Wie was just six shots back after a 71.
