Dr. Jeffrey Randall, a Lawrence sports medicine specialist, was a featured speaker at The Southwestern Orthopaedics Fellowship Conference May 15 at the University of Arizona. He gave a presentation about shoulder instability. Randall, of The Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine, is a team orthopedic physician for Kansas University athletics.

Randy Freivogel, program director for The Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine, recently attended a two-day symposium on clinical biomechanics and rehabilitation of the foot and ankle. The program, which was in Kansas City, focused on evaluation and treatment of foot postural abnormalities and the relationship to other lower extremity orthopedic problems. Freivogel practices at TherapyWorks and is a rehabilitation consultant for Kansas University athletic programs.

Steve Swartz, Lawrence, has been named the public information officer for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He has worked at newspapers for nearly 30 years, most recently as metro editor at The Topeka Capital-Journal. He received a degree in journalism from Kansas University in 1974.

David Omar has been appointed home loan consultant for the Lawrence office of Countrywide Home Loans Inc. He will work with home buyers, builders and real estate agents, and provide information on a variety of home financing options for new and existing homes.

Terry Pickrell has joined The Investment Center at KU Credit Union as a registered representative. Pickrell, an Arkansas State University graduate, worked the past three years for a Wall Street firm.

Megan Richardson has joined First State Bank & Trust as a personal banker at its office on Sixth and Vermont streets. Richardson previously worked 18 years at her family’s business, Holiday Travel. Richardson received a bachelor’s degree in art history in 1989 from Kansas University.

Cinda Garrison, of Prairie Patches in Lawrence, recently completed the seminar Everyday Design, which was sponsored by Teleflora in Oklahoma City. She participated in four days of hands-on design sessions, mastering the latest in creating designs with fresh flowers and foliage. Tom Bowling, a well-known floral artist and instructor, focused on creating container and vase arrangement using the latest techniques. Garrison received a certificate of completion from the Teleflora Education Center.

Rep. Tom Sloan, R-Lawrence, spoke at the National Wind Coordinating Committee meeting June 28-29 in Dallas. He talked about the economic development benefits of using wind power to generate electricity, best practices for locating wind turbines, and improving electric transmission system capabilities to move wind power from rural Kansas to metropolitan customers.
The U.S. Department of Energy notes that Kansas has the potential to be one of the top three states in generating electricity using wind power. Kansas has one wind farm in operation near Montezuma.
Honors and awards
Kansas City, Mo.-based Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group has been named one of the Top 10 Small Businesses of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. The company was chosen from among 100 entries after a review of its history, employee relations, community involvement and financial health.
Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group also was named the 2004 Grubb & Ellis Affiliate of the Year. The award is presented to the affiliate that ranks highest in areas such as quality of client service, utilization of systems, tools and processes and participation in the affiliate program.

The Kansas Bar Assn. has recognized Terence Leibold, Lawrence, as the 2004 recipient of its Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. Leibold was honored at an awards luncheon during the KBA annual meeting on June 18 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka.
Leibold received a bachelor’s degree in 1993 and a juris doctor in 1996 from Kansas University’s School of Law and has been a member of the KBA since then. He practices primarily in the area of real estate law with Barber Emerson L.C. in Lawrence.

Sue Novak, editor and writer at the Kansas State Historical Society, will receive a first-place award in the National Federation of Press Women’s 2004 Communications Contest. Novak, managing editor of Kansas Heritage magazine, was selected for two articles in the history category: “WPA Kansas,” published in fall 2003 on the Works Progress Administration, and “Splendor on the Screen,” published in spring 2003 on drive-in theaters. The award will be presented at the NFPW National Communications Conference in September in Lexington, Ky.

Lawrence native Hsulin Peng, a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was a member of a team that was named runner-up in the 15th annual MIT $50K Entrepreneurship Competition, which was May 13. Her team, Hyperscore, developed software that allows the user to compose music by drawing lines and shapes of various colors across a computer screen, unlocking musical creativity without needing years of training. The software would be targeted for children, educators and professional musicians.

Pinnacle Career Institute, 1601 W. 23rd St., announces a Billing and Coding program and five Microsoft Office workshops.
The company’s 480 clock-hour Billing and Coding program is designed for experienced coders to prepare for the spring 2005 AHIMA CCS-P certification examination. It will be from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, starting July 26.
The Microsoft Office workshops will be on Saturday mornings. They will include Introduction to Microsoft Word, Introduction to Microsoft Excel, Introduction to Microsoft Access, Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint and Mail Merge Concepts.
