Self: ‘I like what I’m doing’

Coach uncertain about Krzyzewski's future

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski needs the long holiday weekend to decide whether his coaching future remains in college in Durham, N.C., or in Los Angeles with the NBA’s Lakers.

The indecision of one of college basketball’s most recognizable names has everybody in hoops buzzing: “Will he stay or will he go?”

“That I don’t know,” Kansas University coach Bill Self said Friday. “If he goes, it’d be a loss as when any great in a profession elects to do something else.”

Self will not overreact and say Krzyzewski’s leaving would signal a problem in the college game.

“As far as our profession, it doesn’t hurt our profession,” Self said. “We’d lose our largest figure now as we speak, but I think somebody else will emerge as one of those type coaches that has a reputation and track record and the class to exemplify the profession as he does.”

It’s been said Krzyzewski was angry after losing so many high school recruits and college underclassmen to the NBA.

“He’s been doing it longer than I have. I understand why some coaches are so intrigued by it (NBA) and some are not,” Self said.

“I like what I’m doing. I know we have problems, but I’ve not found anything perfect, yet.

“There’s frustration at every level, including the NBA. In the NBA you work on basketball and don’t worry about recruiting. There are negatives, too.”
