Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to the Lawrence Catholic School, participated in Pelathe Cub Scout Day Camp June 7-11 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Those who participated were: Lucas Vogelsang, Jacob Pfeifer, August Murphy-Beach, Eric Glogau, Maxwell Munson, Elias Schneck, Kyle Vogelsang, Alex Waite and Same Witte, Den 8; and Phillip Commons, Simon Elwell, Luke Oberrieder, Thomas Peterson, Clayton Pfeifer, Jakob Walter, Austin Dominguez, Noah Malsbury and Ben Witte, Den 9. Adults who served as walking leaders were Chris Munson, Alisa Waite, Marlon Schneck, Charlie Dominguez, Mike Oberrieder, Kent Peterson and Patricia Peterson. Chris Munson, John Pfeifer, Nora Murphy, Cyndy Glogau, Steve Vogelsang, Patricia Peterson, Mike Fitzgerald, Linda Vogelsang and Debbie Wulf-Walter served on the staff.

  • Cub Scout Pack 3055, chartered to Sunset Hill School, had a Kite Derby on June 19. The kites were made by the boys and their fathers. Boys who participated were: John McCain, Kjell Mullenix, Sam Pyle, John Ross, Nickolaus Schmidt and Gavin Spence. Kjell Mullenix won an award for Boy’s Choice of “coolest” kite.
  • Oliver Devlin, an Eagle Scout from Troop 55 and a senior at Free State High School, was recognized by the Topeka Chapter No. 128, of the National Sojourners Inc. He was the national winner of an essay contest titled “What does the American Creed Mean to You Today?” He earned the recognition May 24.
  • A father-son combination was elevated to new Mic-O-Say positions during ceremonies June 19 at Bartle Scout Reservation. Dan Sheely, an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 55, became a Sachem and is now entitled to sit with the Tribal Council. Tom Sheely was elevated to “Keepers of the Wampum.” Mic-O-Say is a camping fraternity at Bartle Scout Reservation, founded to encourage older boys and adults to continue in Scouting.
  • Pelathe Cub Scout Day Camp was June 7-11 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The event was attended by 308 scouts who represented 16 Packs: 3051, 3052, 3053, 3055, 3056, 3057, 3058, 3059, 3064, 3065, 3071, 3072, 3077, 3363, 3370 and 3462. Volunteers helped make the event successful. Among the volunteers were den chiefs from Boy Scout Troops 52, 55, 50, 59, 61 and members of the venturing crew. Sue Reiske, Deb Vannicola and Pat DeLaTorre served on the administrative staff. Rod Zinn was the program director. Nicolette Bennett, the new day camp director, helped make sure the camp earned accreditation. Family Night was June 10. About 40 boys participated in the Webelos II Overnight which followed Family Night. Staff raffle contest winners were: Dom Reiske, John Wagner, Desiree Richmond, Andrew Denney and Deb Vannicola.
