Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The 6:30 p.m. Sunday service will be canceled at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

The Royal Rangers, youth group, children’s classes and adult Bible study will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

There will be a patriotic tribute to American heritage during the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

After the service, there will be a cookout and picnic for anyone who would like to join in fellowship. Evening worship service canceled.

Jeremy and Melissa Ferrero will share in the 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. service July 11.

Faith Church of the Nazarene

There will be a commemorative worship service from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1020 Kasold Drive.

Special music, Communion and worship are planned for the celebration.

Service is open to the public.

First Baptist Church

Christian freedom will be the theme Sunday at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

Included in the Sunday liturgy will be a medley of patriotic hymns and a sermon from the Rev. Marcus McFaul on Christian freedom.

Baptism will be celebrated in the second service, led by Rev. Thomas and Janis Cobbs. There will be Communion in both services.

First Baptist Church and Peace Mennonite Church will coordinate and serve a Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen holiday cookout Sunday, featuring hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad and watermelon.

July 11 will mark the start of First Baptist Church’s summer emphasis, “Practicing Our Faith,” an educational and worship experience involving aspects of Christian practices. It will run through Aug. 8.

First Christian Church

The Rev. Randy Beeman and Linda Beeman will lead premarital counseling sessions Aug. 8 and 22 and Sept. 19 in Room 317 of First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

Subjects for the sessions are: God’s Plan for My Life/Communication Skills; Family/Finance; Sexual Intimacy/Ceremony Options. There is a $20 donation per person for materials for the sessions.

First Presbyterian Church

During the 9 a.m. Sunday church school hour, there will be a “Camp Parable” — a class in a tent — for the children at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will participate in Mountain T.O.P. Ministry.

Sixteen youth and adults from the church will leave at 6 a.m. today for their annual week-long mission and ministry trip in the Tennessee mountains.

While there, the group will do projects such as house painting, yard work and minor construction.

The church will offer “Lava Lava Island” vacation Bible school from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 12-16.

Indian Hills Church of God

Special attention will be given to the nation’s military during 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship at Indian Hills Church of God, Louisiana and 29th St. Terrace.

The Rev. Bill Kimbel will share a message based on Isaiah 1:18, titled “Red, White and Blue: Do These Colors Run True for You?”

There will be 9:30 a.m. Sunday school.

Lawrence Heights Christian Church

Lawrence Heights Christian Church, 2321 Peterson Road, will offer vacation Bible school July 18-23. The theme is “SonGames 2004.” An Olympian who competed in the 1994 Olympic Games will be present for the opening ceremony.

Morning Star Christian Church

Morning Star Christian Church, 998 N. 1771 Road, will sponsor a bike parade today at Quail Run School, 1130 Inverness Drive.

Decorating will begin at 9 a.m., and the parade is 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their bikes, trikes, strollers and wagons, and the church will provide the decorations.

A Lawrence firetruck will be on hand, and there will be fun activities for children.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive, will be open at noon today to pray for the nation.

There will be a special time of prayer and worship from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. Usual morning service starts at 10 a.m.

Potluck for international students will begin after the morning service. It will be at the home of Walt and Ann Kihm, 315 Dakota.

New Hope Fellowship

New Hope Fellowship, 1449 Kasold Drive, will have a special freedom service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Darrell Brazell, pastor, will speak on “The Fight for Freedom: Freedom from Sin, Addictions, Religion, Performance and Shame.”

Langston Hemenway and Adam Pearce will lead this contemporary celebration service. It is open to the public.

Plymouth Congregational Church

There will be a combined service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Special music will be presented by the Plymouth Festival Brass and the chancel choir. Plymouth’s new organist/choirmaster, Geoffrey Ward, will perform “Festive Toccata” by Denis Bedard as the postlude.

Immediately following the service, there will a Fourth of July picnic in the parking lot of Intrust Bank, to the northwest of the church.

There will be no 11:15 a.m. Sunday service.

Senior high youth will be going Wednesday to Worlds of Fun.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

There will not be a liturgy Sunday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

The parish office will be closed Monday.

This is the Rev. Charles Polifka’s last weekend at St. John Parish. He reports to his new assignment Monday in Victoria.

The parish welcomes its new pastor, the Rev. John Schmeidler, a priest and Capuchin friar who was formerly associate director at the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center, 1631 Crescent Road.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

There will be a special guest preacher speaking on “Hope for Those Who Hurt” during the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Children will be making crafts, during the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services, in celebration of the Fourth of July.

Stull United Methodist Church

Stull United Methodist Youth Fellowship will sponsor its annual Independence Day Celebration today at Stull United Methodist Church, 251 N. 1600 Road.

Kickball, volleyball and carnival games will begin the festivities at 6:30 p.m. Pork burgers, buns and drinks will be provided at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share, as well as lawn chairs.

A commercial fireworks display will begin at dark. Event is free of charge; youth will accept freewill donations to help cover cost of fireworks.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Adult forum for Sunday will be a video presentation, “Landmarks of Faith: Christ Church Philadelphia.”

Prelude and postlude at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service will be organ music composed by American composers writing at the time of Lawrence’s founding and played in observance of the city’s sesquicentennial. Pieces will be played by church organist Elizabeth Stephens.

Trinity Grandmother’s Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the home of Sandra Weichert. Group will begin its study of the book “Know Me, Hold Me, Sing to Me: What My Grandchild Taught Me about God,” by Kathleen Chesto. Plans will also be made for the secret angel program, which will begin in the fall.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Charles Maahs, former bishop, will be guest presider for the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. Services will have Holy Communion.

The church office will be closed Monday.

Senior high school group will gather for a Bible study and “Hang Night” at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday in the youth room.

Stephen Ministry continuing education class will be at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in the social room.

Victory Bible Church

West Side Presbyterian Church

There will be regular services at 11 a.m. Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Due to the holiday, the sacrament of Holy Communion will be postponed to July 11, as will the Session meeting in the evening.

West Side will be in charge of the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen Thursday.
