Lawrence team third in Great Race division

High school students from Lawrence driving cross-country in a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air were sitting in third place Thursday with two days left to improve their lot in the Great Race.

A team of students from Lawrence High School and Free State High School is vying for the $10,000 prize in the race’s amateur division.

“It could flip back and forth any day,” said Dave Tenpenny, an LHS auto instructor.

Two other teams of high school students are competing for the X Cup title. The four days with the lowest scores for each team will be thrown out when the winner is determined, Tenpenny said.

The students drove about 360 miles Thursday and camped at a hotel in Truckee, Calif., just north of Lake Tahoe.

The race began June 19 in Jacksonville, Fla. It ends Saturday in Monterey, Calif.
