Leaders to look at value-added agriculture

Area farmers and agricultural leaders will meet Monday to discuss value-added agricultural projects.

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Agribusiness Committee will sponsor “Exploring New Agribusiness Frontiers in Douglas County” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

“Our goal at the end of the day is to have two, three or maybe four ideas that people will say I’m interested in or I’m willing to invest a little time in,” said Bill Wood, agriculture agent for the Douglas County Extension Service and a committee member.

Value-added agriculture involves taking existing crops and increasing their value by using them in new products. Wood said the conference also would explore nontraditional crops that could be grown in the area.

The $5 event, which includes lunch, is open to the public. For more information, call the Douglas County Farm Bureau at 843-2395.
