Police say teenager’s quick thinking helped capture sexual assault suspect

? A 13-year-old girl got the cell phone number of a man who allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted her and then used it to help in the suspect’s capture, police said.

“It’s incredible, it’s really incredible,” said Sgt. John Cisper of the Police Department’s sex crimes unit. “The girl thought on her feet and it worked. … It really helped her in hopefully one of the toughest situations she’ll ever face.”

Alberto Martinez, of Kansas City, was charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree attempted statutory sodomy and one count each of attempted forcible rape, first-degree child molestation, kidnapping and furnishing pornographic material to a minor.

Prosecutors said he also used the names Luis A. Gomez and Alberto Hernandez-Martinez. His age was given as 35 or 32.

Police said the girl gave this account of the incident:

She was walking to class Wednesday morning when a minivan approached her near the school.

The driver of the van held up a piece of paper, apparently a bill, saying in Spanish that he couldn’t speak English and needed help.

The girl, who also spoke Spanish, told him there were people at her school who could help him. She accepted the offer of a ride to the school, but the man drove her instead to a secluded area northeast of downtown Kansas City.

He fondled her and asked her to perform a sex act, but she refused.

When he started to become more aggressive, the girl persuaded him to let her go. She convinced him that her family and school would notice her missing and come looking.

She also promised that she would call him later. He provided a name and a cell phone number before dropping her off about a mile away from where he abducted her.

The girl contacted police, and while officers listened in, she called the cell phone number and arranged a meeting with the man later Wednesday. When Martinez arrived, police said, officers stopped him and called the cell phone number.

When it rang, police arrested him.
