Snow to be light, but temperatures continue to drop

The deep freeze Lawrence has been in for a few days is getting even frostier.

Today’s dusting of snow will be topped off overnight with even colder temperatures. And there’s even a chance for freezing rain Saturday, says Matt Jacobs, 6News meteorologist.

“Overnight, we’re going to hit zero, which will be the coldest so far this winter. It will be very early tomorrow morning, about 6 a.m.,” Jacobs said.

“The winds won’t be very strong, but the windchill will be below zero. There will be north winds 1 to 5 (mph), so the windchills could get down as low as negative 10.”

Although windchills have been in negative numbers this week, zero is the lowest the actual temperature has been since it dropped to 3 on Jan. 6, he said.

The high today will be 16, with windchills near zero, he said.

“We’ll have light snow through the afternoon, with accumulations of less than an inch,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs said the cold spell will continue for a few days.

“The warm spot over the next couple of days will be Saturday, when it gets up to 30,” he said. “But we do have a chance of freezing rain, turning to snow that day.”
